The Leonid Meteor Shower November 2009

November 17, 2009 - 305 views

The Leonid Meteor Shower rears its head every year at this time. The running joke is that it is natures’ fireworks for my birthday which is on November 17th, the same day the shower is set to peak.

Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office stated;

“We’re predicting 20 to 30 meteors per hour over the Americas, and as many as 200 to 300 per hour over Asia”

If you are in bed or there is overcast or otherwise incliment weather, how do you get to see these sparkles in the sky ? Well there are plenty of places onine.

High-resolution images and high-definition video animation of the Leonid meteor shower are available online at StarDate’s Media Center. Also, Atronomy.com is offering podcasts as well.

The Leonid/NASA Site has technical insight via;

A significant shower is expected this year when Earth crosses the 1466-dust and 1533-dust ejecta of comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle.
