How About World AIDS Day 2009?

Baltimore will join cities across the nation today and deck a signature landmark in red lights to observe World AIDS Day. The Monumental City has chosen the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon Place and will turn the nearly 200-foot tower crimson at 7 p.m. Ten American cities are participating in the observance to raise awareness and funds to fight the AIDS epidemic in Africa, where it’s reported that 22 million people are coping with the disease and 4,100 die every day.

San Francisco will light its Coit Tower and City Hall, while Los Angeles will turn its Central Library and the pylons at its airport crimson, and Chicago will use its CNA Center to mark the day. Other participating cities include Boston, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, St. Louis, Columbus, Ohio, and Providence, R.I. Baltimore’s observance will begin at 6 p.m. with a service at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, which faces the monument, and a candlelight vigil. Mayor Sheila Dixon is scheduled to deliver remarks shortly before the lighting. Many of the red lights will be switched to multiple colors as the city prepares for its annual holiday celebration at the monument at 7 p.m. Thursday.
