It’s been a year of “Fearless” and fairytales for Taylor Swift.

The 20-year-old country cutie — who has been on a winning streak for months with her hit album, “Fearless” — won four Grammy Awards Sunday, including the night’s top prize, album of the year.

“I did not see it coming tonight,” she told reporters after the show. “This was a beautiful, beautiful surprise.”

Earlier in the evening, Swift performed her song, “Today Was a Fairytale,” which apparently became more and more true as the night went on. She also sang with one of her heroes, Stevie Nicks, on a mash-up that mixed Nicks’ hit “Rhiannon” with Swift’s award-winning “You Belong With Me.”

Swift swiped the night’s biggest prize, but Beyonce was the biggest winner. The multihyphenate entertainer made Grammy history as she collected six awards, the most won by a female artist in one night.

The 28-year-old diva won song of the year for her anthem “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), a trophy she shared with three fellow writers. “Single Ladies” also won prizes for best female R&B vocal and best R&B song.

Her song “At Last” was named best traditional R&B vocal performance and “I Am … Sasha Fierce” won best R&B contemporary album.

“This has been such an amazing night for me and I’d love to thank the Grammys,” Beyonce said after winning best female pop vocal for “Halo.” She also thanked her family and her husband, Jay-Z.

Swift said she was excited to find a place for her four awards, which included best country song and best female country vocal for “White Horse” and best country album for “Fearless.”

Another country act to take a top award was the Zac Brown Band, which won best new artist.

Nashville rockers Kings of Leon celebrated throughout the night as the family band snapped up three trophies, including record of the year.

“I’m not going to lie, we’re all a little drunk,” said lead singer Caleb Followill. “But we’re happy drunks.”

Lady Gaga won two Grammys during the pre-telecast ceremony but didn’t get to strut her headline-making outfits on stage during the prime-time show. She still showed her musical prowess, opening the program with her Grammy-nominated hit “Poker Face” before joining Elton John on a duet that melded her song “Speechless” with his classic “Your Song” in a performance that featured dueling pianos and glitter-painted faces.

Performances dominated the nearly three-and-a-half hour telecast. Usher, Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood shared the stage during a tribute to Michael Jackson that also featured 3-D footage created for the comeback concerts Jackson was planning when he died.

Jackson’s young children, Prince and Paris, accepted a lifetime achievement award for their late father.

“Through all his songs his message was simple, love. We will continue to spread his message and help the world,” Prince said.

Haiti was also on the minds of many Grammy revelers, who wore red cross buttons in support of the devastated nation. Mary J. Blige joined Andrea Bocelli in a rousing rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” which was not only designed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the song’s big Grammy wins, but to raise money for the people of Haiti. The performance, introduced by Haitian native Wyclef Jean, will be available via iTunes.com/target, with the funds going to earthquake relief.

Other standouts on stage included Pink, who performed “Glitter in the Air” while dangling from the Staples Center ceiling on swaths of silk fabric, and the Black Eyed Peas, which were joined by dancers dressed as stereo speakers when they performed two songs from their Grammy-nominated album, “The E.N.D.”

The Peas won three trophies, including best pop performance by a group for “I Gotta Feeling.”

For Swift, the main feeling Sunday was elation.

“I just hope that you know how much this means to me … that we get to take this back to Nashville,” she said as she accepted the best-album honor. “Oh my God, our families are freaking out in their living rooms. My dad and my little brother are losing their minds in the living room right now.”

Even though Lady Gaga only got two awards for her five nominations, she grabbed all the attention. Gaga opened the awards with a duet with Elton John, “Poker Face.” With a high cut-dazzling emerald leotard with platinum blonde, iron-straight extensions. Plus sparkling fuschia triangles covering her eyes, enough to distract from what at best appeared to be a very uncomfortable wardrobe malfunction.

Later her shining locks had been dulled by smoke and ash and her eye make-up duly smudged when she performed the very effervescent Elton John for a remix of his iconic number, “Your Song.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A thick band of heavy snow, freezing rain and cold temperatures was spreading across southeastern states early Saturday, delivering a messy weekend of slick roads, power outages and prime sledding for kids out of school.

Nearly a foot of snow had fallen in parts of western North Carolina, and nearly 10 inches had fallen in some areas north of Memphis, Tenn. In Nashville, about a half-foot of snow was on the ground, the National Weather Service reported.

Jake Guthrie, manager of a Nashville Ace Hardware, pasted a “Sold Out of Sleds” sign at the entrance of the store after selling “several hundred” in the last two days.

Staff had to tell a steady stream of callers that they wouldn’t have any more sleds until Friday.

“But winter’s not over yet,” Guthrie said.

Few cars were on the roads Saturday morning around the city, and most people seemed to be hunkered down indoors. Some ventured out on camouflage all-terrain vehicles usually reserved for hunting season.

The storm left roads icy and snowpacked across the South, and thousands were without power as ice accumulated. Although police said they had to clear hundreds of wrecks overnight, there were no deaths or serious injuries reported.

Will O’Halloran, publisher of City Social Magazine in Baton Rouge, La., got caught in the storm in both directions of his monthly trip to pick up the publication from a printer outside Louisville, Ky. At one point he thought his headlights were broken, only to find they were covered in ice.

“People are crazy out there,” O’Halloran, 49, said over breakfast at a McDonald’s outside Nashville. “Cars spinning, trailers jackknifed. I just tried to keep it at 40 mph and move along.”

In mountainous western North Carolina, I-26 near Asheville and I-40 near Black Mountain were shut down Friday night after snow and icy roads caused multiple wrecks. Duke Energy reported about 35,000 outages in the state, mostly in the western mountains.

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue declared a state of emergency Saturday, and 30 National Guard soldiers were standing by to help emergency crews.

Highway Patrol Trooper Gene Williams told the Citizen-Times of Asheville that 530 wrecks were reported overnight — including a snowplow that overturned — though no one was seriously hurt in the crashes. Virginia State Police said they worked more than 100 crashes overnight. As much as six inches of snow had fallen in southeastern parts of the state.

States of emergency were also declared in Arkansas, Tennessee and parts of Virginia.

In Kentucky, the state transportation cabinet said in a news release that about 5 to 6 inches of snow had fallen in most of the state, with nearly a foot piling up closer to the Tennessee line.

Snowfall in the Nashville area reached 4 to 6 inches before tapering off early Saturday, said weather service meteorologist Darrell Massie. But he cautioned that roads remained “snowpacked and pretty dangerous.”

Precipitation also was subsiding in Memphis with up to 2 inches of snow and sleet, but the weather service said areas north of Memphis had seen 6 to 10 inches of snow. Most flights at Memphis International Airport were canceled, and Graceland stopped giving tours of the Elvis Presley home at midmorning Friday.

More than 6,000 customers in the area were without power Saturday morning, according to the Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division.

Temperatures were forecast to remain below freezing through the weekend.

The weather also cut short a farewell celebration at the National Zoo in Washington for young panda Tai Shan, who will be flown to China on Thursday to become part of a breeding program.

Meanwhile, states in the storm’s wake were uncovering from inches of snow and caked ice that fouled electricity to hundreds of thousands of customers.

Gov. Brad Henry requested a federal disaster declaration for all of Oklahoma, where more than 164,000 homes and businesses were without power Friday night after a massive storm left up to a half-inch of ice on trees and power lines.

A spokeswoman for Public Service Co. of Oklahoma, Andrea Chancellor, said it could be five days before electricity is restored to all customers.

The storm has been blamed for the death of a 70-year-old Oklahoma woman in a propane explosion. The woman and her husband had apparently been using propane heaters to warm their house in Ada, Assistant Fire Chief Robby Johnson said. The woman, who was not identified, died and her husband was injured when a propane tank exploded Friday morning.

The Flying Tomato, Shaun White, had a nasty rash during a practice run before went to win gold at the Winter X Games last night. He took a nasty fall just 45 minutes before he was due to compete. Under two weeks, he is still going to be in the Winter Olympics. He took a hit on the chin and his helmet came flying off after practicing the double mctwist 1260, which is so difficult.

He was frustrated but ok, and he went on to win gold with that move with a score of 95.33.
