“Even though I’m in amazing hands here,” Wiens said, “I’m also in God’s hands.”

The surgery was paid for by the Department of Defense, which gave the hospital a $3.4 million research grant for five transplants. About a dozen face transplants have been done worldwide, in the U.S., France, Spain and China.

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, have separated, with Shriver moving out of their Brentwood mansion while the two determine the next step in their 25-year marriage. The breakup comes about four months after Schwarzenegger ended a bumpy, two-term run as California governor, a job his wife never wanted him to pursue. Since then, Schwarzenegger, 63, has been fashioning a role as an international advocate for green energy, giving speeches and lining up work in Hollywood. Shriver, 55, has guest-edited an edition of Oprah Winfrey’s magazine but also talked about the stress of changing roles after serving as California’s first lady.

“This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us,” the statement read. “After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship.They also adds,”We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment.”

The joint statement, issued by a spokesman for Schwarzenegger, said the two were working on the future of their relationship while living apart and they would continue to parent their four children – Katherine, 21, Christina, 19, Patrick, 17, and Christopher, 13.

Officials were going door-to-door, warning about 240 people to get out before the river reaches its expected peak Tuesday. In all, residents in more than 1,300 homes have been told to go, and some 370 people were staying in shelters.

Rising water flooded 25 mobile homes in a trailer park in north Memphis Saturday morning. The residents had been evacuated.

Jittery Memphis residents have been abandoning low-lying homes for days as the dangerously surging river threatened to crest at 48 feet, just shy of a 48.7-foot record of a devastating 1937 flood.

Record river levels, some dating as far back as the 1920s, have already been broken in some areas. Heavy rains and snowmelt have been blamed for the flooding.

Meanwhile, there was relief in communities upstream when water levels began to recede.

In the small town of Hickman, Ky., officials and volunteers spent nearly two weeks piling sandbags on top of each other to shore up the 17-mile levee. About 75 residents were told to flee town, but by Saturday, the levee had held, and officials boasted that only a few houses appeared to be damaged and no one had been injured or killed.

“We have held back the Mississippi River and that’s a feat,” said one emergency management director, Hugh Caldwell. “We didn’t beat it, but it didn’t beat us.”

Some were left cleaning up mud oozing in front doors and wrecking carpeting and furnishings.

Since the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, a disaster that killed hundreds, Congress has made protecting the cities on the lower Mississippi a priority. The Army Corps of Engineers has spent $13 billion to fortify cities with floodwalls and carve out overflow basins and ponds — a departure from the “levees-only” strategy that led to the 1927 disaster.

Osama bin Laden may be at the bottom of the ocean, but all of his wives are alive.

Time magazine reports that “a U.S. intelligence official says one of Bin Laden’s wives identified her husband by name as the SEALs closed in for the kill.” It would be safe to assume that was a different wife from the one who purportedly was willing to take a bullet for Bin Laden.

“In the room with Bin Laden, a woman — Bin Laden’s wife — rushed the U.S. assaulter and was shot in the leg but not killed. Bin Laden’s wife wasn’t the only woman in the compound. Twenty-three children and nine women were in the three-story building at the time of the assault and were turned over to Pakistani authorities, said a U.S. official who requested anonymity to discuss an intelligence matter, the Associated Press reported.

It was reported Monday that one of Bin Laden’s wives was used as a human shield and died in the raid. According to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, the woman who was in the room with the Al Qaeda leader was one of Bin Laden’s four wives. He said she was shot but not killed, and she was not being used as a shield.

“Obviously some of the information was, came in piece by piece and is being reviewed and updated and elaborated on,” Carney told reporters, explaining that the original account was derived “with great haste.”

“We will continue to gather and provide to you details as we get them and we’re able to release them,” Carney said at the news briefing.
